Editorial Reviews:

The securities industry undergoes constant change, and the six-hour Series 7 Examination to certify stockbrokers constantly changes with the times. This newly enlarged and updated manual reflects the most recent Series 7 exams in length, question types, and degree of difficulty. An updated introduction gives an overview of the test with information on registration fees, how the test is administered, and how test takers can register. The book’s first ten chapters constitute a self-teaching course that covers every aspect of the securities industry. It explains various types of securities and offers an overview of business law, the functioning of the New York Stock Exchange, and other major markets. It also explains the structure of investment companies, the Federal Reserve System, margin accounts, options, and securities analysis. A final chapter consists of two full-length model Series 7 exams with answers. This self-study manual and its model exams provide comprehensive preparation for the difficult but important Series 7 Examination.

Summary: Use to augment, but not to pass the exam!
Comment: This book provided a few tips and pointers, but other than that, not many relevant points. I would not purchase this book; if you desire to skim it, my suggestion is to check out the library. It's not worth the cost, because the information is so scant. No one could pass the exam with this book in and of itself.

Summary: Rough Draft
Comment: While the content of this guide is certainly useful, it is far from complete with respect to the material you will need to know to pass the Series 7. In addition, the organization of the material is jumbled. In many areas it looks much like what one expect to see in a first draft, with paragraphs "pasted" out of place, and topic overviews in some instances ending abruptly (and prematurely).

All in all, I suppose the old adage "you get what you pay for" would apply here. For $10 or so, it is a worthwhile investment for the quizzes and practice tests alone. However, I would not advise anyone to depend on this guide as their sole resource in preparing for the Series 7 exam.

Summary: Proceed With Caution!
Comment: I bought several books to make sure my coverage was complete, and to give me a good base of sample questions to draw from. This book provides test questions at the end of each chapter, so I planned to use it for review work. That's about all it's worth.

The chapters themselves leave you woefully unprepared to take even the test questions Barron's includes. Many critical issues are explained in just a few words, with no particular emphasis. For instance, where other books might spell out the order of payment when a corporation is liquidated, this book makes a brief mention that is easy to overlook. This problem is endemic to the entire book.

Note that all of the books I've read have incorrect, imprecise, or conflicting statements. For example, the Boston Institute of Finance Stockbroker Course Series 7/63 Preparation Guide says "A stockholder has the right to examine the list of stockholders. It does not mean the stockholder can examine detailed financial records of the corporation." Barron's book says "A shareholder has the right to examine the books and records of the corporation." The truth is, it depends. Even non-shareholders can view 10K statements and other filings. But examining detailed books would probably require a legal procedure by a shareholder, regardless of whether s/he had the right conferred by owning common shares.

It's certainly cheap, so if you just want a set of additional test questions, go ahead and get it. But, I wouldn't use this for anything other than summary/review work. I definitely wouldn't recommend it as the only guide you buy - the Dearborn Passtrak is much better.

Summary: Barrons is "barron" of useful information
Comment: Just took the series 7 today ( 84%) 6/21/04. I read this book first and realized in about a month it was a total waste...many errors, horribly written...don't waste a penny or your time on this one!

Summary: Brief, concise, excellent starting point.
Comment: I purchased Barron's and ARCO/Thompson's material. I would highly recommend this book as a great starting point for concise answers to specific questions on the Series 7, and a general core review. It does fail in that there are details it leaves out, but after taking the review questions and practice exams, you'll know exactly what those are, and what additional information you need to research. Other more complete books often leave you bumuddled and confused with the massive amounts of information, over what will actually be on the test. This book will help you get the core concepts down quickly, and from there you can move on to more complete material and additional practice exams and computer based testing to feel in the gaps without drowning in an onslaught of information. I would recommend this as the best starting point, well worth its cost and time spent studying, but you will need to purchase more material with additional practice exams, and more detailed information to fill in the gaps.
