Editorial Reviews:

Reap the benefits of the home workplace revolution with this practical resource that guides managers and employees through working from home either full or part-time.

If you are charged with establishing or executing a home-work policy in your business, the book explains which functions are best suited for working from home and how to maximize the benefits to the business (such as reduced real estate costs, lower turnover, fewer sick days, more productive employees, and access to larger labor pools). It also covers the full range of issues that are essential to a successful program:

- Selecting, training and managing home workers - Effectively communicating and monitoring performance - Enabling home working via reasonable and clear home office policies, networking access, temporary desks for office visits, and IT support - Legal issues such as data privacy laws, workplace regulations, liability insurance, and taxation

If you are a current or prospective home-based worker, this book will help you to better understand and comply with management’s thinking to make working at home a success, so that you can enjoy reduced stress and increased flexibility through telecommuting. Key topics include:

- Choosing suitable home office locations and facilities - Specifying the most appropriate voice and data technology, equipment and furniture - Strategies to cope with distractions and overcome isolation

The book also provides a model home-working legal agreement, as well as a checklist of issues for home-working success.

Summary: A REVOLUTION IS COMING
Comment: After reading this book, it confirmed a belief that I've had for years, there definitely is "an impending multifaceted crises," according to author Brendan B. Read, that is "facing organizations that could affect their (and your) ability to function and deliver products and services effectively." The problem is lost time (worsening (and costly) daily commuting times are getting longer and delays worse) and increasing commuting costs (high gas prices) across the board for all of us. Read has done an outstanding job in this book of pointing out that "it is a crises that will impact the quality of lives for each of us." The situation is worsening by the day, and will eventually cause the collapse of life as we know it here in this country and around the globe.

Read begins by covering arguably the single most universal IT requirement: Components to handle voice. This is quickly followed by an examination of the equipment: computers, peripherals and backing them up. Next, the author examines data, which includes fax and video. Then, he looks at home office locations and facilities requirements. Next, Read points out that there are a lot of components that go into initiating, supporting, and managing home office networking. Then, the author discusses how to make the program roll and keep it rolling smoothly--how to bring home working on home. Finally, he covers how to smoothly put the brakes on home working employees activities.

According to Read, what is needed is a home working revolution on how we look at and manage employees. This revolution is now underway. Initially, that is what this excellent book is all about!
