Summary: Comprehensive Guidebook for Newbies
Comment: This book is quite comprehensive for those exploring working at home, or those looking to add to their offerings. There are 101 different business profiles, plus an extensive "how-to" on basic business, as well as a computer section.
While this book could be updated to be on top of current technology (social networking was not even around when this book was written), the basics are still the same. Good business practices remain essentially the same even though tools and methods may evolve.
The Edwards are self-employment gurus and have been for a long time. Their books helped inspire me to start my own successful business, and this one is likely doing the same for readers worldwide. I don't see everyone working from home because some people are not able to handle the isolation and/or are not able to work unsupervised. But, for those of us for whom this is an ideal lifestyle, this book can help. Many of us supplement our main business, and for that, these ideas are very beneficial.
For those wondering how to start from scratch, this book is a great place to start. I doubt if this book would be all anyone would need, but if you are exploring ideas and wondering how to make it happen, get this book.

Summary: Visionary authors
Comment: First of all, if the negative reviewers were such experts in the field, they probably wouldn't be looking for opportunities, so they wouldn't really need this book! I love it when I hear reviewers call something "dated" or "for beginners"...Well if they don't deserve a big pat on the back.
For those who are looking for a little more than something to criticize, this book is ABSOLUTELY LOADED with REAL, LEGITIMATE, BONE FIDE home based business opportunities. If you are still relatively new to the world of working from home, then these opportunities could not possibly be "dated" (that's just ridiculous).
I have spent thousands of dollars on the internet with so called "gurus" and "mentors" whose only real purpose is to keep you ignorant while they empty your wallet... and I am convinced that almost all of them are really clueless about professional entrepreneurship.
The Authors have dealt with computer businesses (from home) in a very refreshing way. No hype, no bull, no gimmicks, no come ons, no fog, no smoke screens, just 101 opportunities to make working from home a reality for you.
If you can't get your seventeen bucks out of this book, then you don't need to be wasting your time trying to act like an entreprneur... cause you won't make it.
Here's some advice. Go through the 101 businesses in the book, pick the ones you are interested in, and then sit at your computer and bookmark all the web sites they mention after each entry, including all the books (look them up on Amazon and then bookmark the pages for later).
By this time you will have yourself a nice little rolodex of tools to begin putting to use in your new profession. I guarantee you that this alone will have paid for the price of the book. And no, the businesses aren't dated. They are actually only the tip of the ice berg.
One more thing. Just a few years ago, two of the biggest names in Direct Marketing were saying the internet was just a fad that would pass. Kind of shocking to think that such "gurus" are so ignorant. No surprise to me, as I know the truth about these fellas. Anyway those with that limited sight are going to say a book like this is dated, because they can't see what's going on in the world around them.
But you are different. You are going to strike gold, by listening to these trustworthy authors and taking their advice. Because friend, there just aren't too many authorities in the world of business and marketing who you can really trust at all. Everything that they say or do has a hidden motive behind it, and it sure isn't your best interests either.
Paul and Sarah Edwards have given some really powerful guidance. What you do with it is up to you. Sure there will be alot of education required, but not nearly as much as would be required by going it alone. I hope you buy this book and I wish you well.

Summary: I Have a Home Computer Business
Comment: As one who makes his living at home using a computer I feel very qualified to make some comments about this book.
1. Become computer literate at a level where you can swap out a failed hard disk or powersupply or upgrade your memory. Your local community college probably has courses on doing this if you need help. Then keep spares of parts that are likely to fail around: power supply, hard drive, monitor, motherboard, CPU, etc. I usually buy these things on eBay before I need them - I just ordered a motherboard for $20 and an 866 MHz Pentium III for $9.
2. Research your business carefully. Some of the ideas in this book aren't very applicable. For instance #46 Internet Service Provider has been pretty well taken over by the big guys and you probably can't compete. And a lot of the things like medical transcription has been taken over by companies in India.
They comment that you should buy the fastest computer you can afford. Unless you really need the power, to do something like high end graphics or computer aided design, you don't need that much power. My fastest machine is a 1 GHz AMD Athlon that I bought with a 17" monitor at a thrift store for $75. I did upgrade the memory.
Further, you need more than one machine. I use four networked together: web server, database & mail server (the Athlon), and two slower machines for serfing the web, word processing, etc. Why two machines, often one gets busy for a minute or two (downloading something for instance) and then I can work using the other one. I also have a spare machine sitting on the floor if one of these should fail. Computers do fail, and Murphy says that will happen at the worst possible time, i.e. Sunday afternoon when you need to deliver your work on Monday morning.

Summary: Not current, although helpful
Comment: This is another of Paul and Sarah Edwards'home business books, originally published in 1997. Much of the information here is similar to the computer-related material in their "The Best Home Businesses" book. Unlike the other book, this one has an Index.
While my comments about their other book obviously hold for this version of that information, the rapid changes in the computer industry make this a trickier buy unless you are already fairly computer savy, in which case you probably wouldn't need it anyway. The tremendous upsurge in outsourcing computer jobs to other countries, as well as sheer technological progress, has changed the face of some of these job categories considerably. You will need to research much more current information before committing to a business mentioned here.
That said, they do provide a good basic overview of what each business might entail. If you do not know much about computer-based business, this would be a good primer to see if something along that line interests you. I would recommend, however, that you do much more research with current information sources before you make a decision.

Summary: The title of this book should be: How NOT to make money.
Comment: Warning!!! DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK!!!It is a complete wast of money.
Even though this book was written a few years ago, there is absolutely nothing in it that could even possibly be helpful. Basically, they just give you a little synopsis of 100 different potential business, from catering, daycare, tutoring, etc ; Businesses that are going to cost you a lot more than you could ever make in profits. And most of the websites they give you(few and far between) and just about all of the newsgroups they give you are gone. There are many books out there about how to make money at home with your computer, and just save yourself the time and most importantly, the money, and look somewhere else...
